Nothing's going to ruin your vacation like one of these spring break mistakes. Luckily, we've also got smart strategies for avoiding them! The two most common spring break mishaps follow from having unprotected sex with someone you barely know, often while intoxicated. If you get hot with someone you have only just met, you'll have to think about the risk of sexually transmitted infections , which affect approximately 65 million Americans. In fact, 19 million new cases of STIs are diagnosed each year. Avoid being one of them by being smart and using protection. The male and female condom are the ONLY forms of contraception that offer some protection against STI transmission-although the only real guarantee is to avoid recklessly casual sex. Spring break sex can also come with another unwanted consequence: Pregnancy. And don't think you are in the clear just because you wore a condom. Just ask the 14-percent of people who get pregnant even though they did. Be safe by bringing-and using!-a backup form of birth control, be it the Pill or the Patch. Another common spring break mistake? A tattoo or body piercing that you really didn't want. Because certain popular spring break locations, like Mexico, don't have the same sanitation laws that U.S. parlors do, you may run an increased risk of infection. Plus, an unwanted tattoo can take up to eight expensive, painful sessions under a laser to fade away for good. When you're drinking heavily, you run the risk of another unintended consequence and that's alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning happens when your body absorbs alcohol more quickly than it can metabolize it. The result can be slowed breathing, heart rate, a stalled gag reflex, and an unwanted trip to a less than savory hospital. The best way to avoid this is to try to drink in moderation. Remember, your body can safely absorb a lot less alcohol then you think, actually only about one bar-sized drink every couple of hours. OK, so you're not drinking excessively, having unsafe sex, or visiting sketchy tattoo parlors. But are you wearing sunscreen? Sunburn is a likely result of spending an excessive amount of time outdoors in sun hotter than your skin is used to. Of course it's painful and can put an end to your partying, but even worse, every bout of sunburn can increase your risk of getting skin cancer later. Avoid it by rubbing an SPF on all exposed skin, and reapplying often , even if you use a waterproof formula. A deductible refers to the amount that you need to pay on your own before your insurance will kick in and cover your health care costs. The most important thing you need to know about your deductible, is that it usually resets every year.. So, if you had a $1,000 deductible and spent $5,500 total in health care this year, your insurance would only provide coverage against $4,500 of your total costs. Deductibles are not usually applied to basic health care, such as visits to your primary care physician and gynecologist. Instead, they are often used when you visit a provider who is not on your health insurance's list of approved doctors. Approved doctors are usually referred to as "in-network," and are chosen by your health insurance provider. Similarly, "out-of-network" doctors are those that your health insurance will not pay for entirely, or at all. Another confusing term, "pre-existing conditions," refers to any health condition that you were already been diagnosed with prior to selecting your insurance. Whether or not additional costs related to a pre-existing condition will be covered by your new insurance depends on a number of factors, including what condition it is, whether you are currently covered by health insurance of some kind, and the type and quality of your new insurance. If you do have a pre-existing condition, you should make sure that you understand how your new insurer will treat ongoing costs related to it. Another term to be familiar with is an "exclusion," which is when your insurance company will not cover a health care service. While these are just a few of the commonly misunderstood terms you'll find in your insurance plan, understanding these concepts will make it a lot easier to understand what's covered - and what's not.More »

Here are 5 things you need to know to make sure you have a safe and healthy trip. One: Update your vaccinations. Traveling to different countries may expose you to diseases that are not common in the US, such as yellow fever or malaria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website has a full listing of required vaccinations by country. You should also make sure you are up-to-date on all standard vaccinations, such as tetanus, and whooping cough. Ask your doctor what's recommended. You will want to get needed inoculations 4 to 6 weeks before your trip, to allow the vaccines to build sufficient immunity. Two: Pack a med kit. In addition to any prescription medications you may need, it's handy to have a few over-the-counter meds readily available. They should include antidiarrheal pills, aspirin or ibuprofen for pain and fever, an antihistamine in case of allergies, an antacid, cough drops, motion sickness pills, and antibacterial cream. Three: Get travel insurance. Many regular health plans don't include coverage outside the U.S., so a trip to the hospital can cost thousands of dollars. You can get short-term insurance for the span of your trip. If you're traveling through your university, they may suggest insurance carriers. Four: Be cautious about what you eat and drink. Contaminated food and water is a major risk factor when traveling abroad and can lead to everything from a bad case of the stomach flu to hepatitis A, food poisoning, and typhoid fever. Skip raw or undercooked foods and opt for dishes that are thoroughly cooked and still warm. Also, if you're unsure about the cleanliness of the water supply, stick with bottled water. Five: Read up on the safety of a country before you go. In some places it may be dangerous to travel alone in parts of certain cities or even with groups in the countryside.
