Cocaine has been glamorized for decades, but a cocaine addiction is no glamorous matter. So what are the real effects of cocaine, and how does the drug treat your body in the long run? Here, we look at the real deal with coke.
About 10 percent of Americans over 12 have tried it at least once-it's cocaine and it's addictive. Cocaine, or coke, is a stimulant which is extracted from the coca plant. The white powder is usually snorted. After “doing a line” of coke, you'll feel extremely euphoric due to a higher than normal release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. You may also feel hypersensitive, mentally alert, and physically energized. A high from snorting may take about ten minutes to kick in, and last fifteen minutes to half an hour. As you “crash” from a high, you'll feel incredibly depressed and desirous of more coke to “fix” the feeling-which is why coke is so addictive. Coming down from cocaine may also leave you fatigued, agitated, and irritable. Long term use of coke is associated with many problems, from nosebleeds and nightmares to seizures and even cardiac arrest. Cocaine has been illegal since 1914, and now you know the real deal with the drug so you can understand its effects.
